No visit
to India is complete without seeing the Taj Mahal in Agra 125
miles from Delhi, and built on the bank of the river Jamuna
between 1631 and 1652 by Shan Jahan, the fifth Mughal Emperor.
An immortal tribute to the memory of his wife , the tomb is
made of pure white marble with inlaid work of semiprecious stones.
It stands in specious gardens of cypress trees, lawns and water
channels. |

Red Fort |
| The
fort, with 70 feet high walls, octagonal towers, and crenelated
ramparts is one and half miles in circumference and holds a
maze of courtyards and gateway. Inside, you also find the Jahangiri
Mahal a fine palace built by Akbar with admirable carvings in
red sandstone, the Musalman Burj octagonal tower which is beautifully
inlaid with semi-precious stones, and the exqusite Pearl Mosque,
built by Shah Jahan, out of pure white marble - uneqalled for
its beauty in design.
Sikandra
The mausoleum of the
third Mughal Emperor Akbar was built in 1603 to 1613 A.D.
The gateway to the mausoleum is one of the most imposing of
its kind. Its massive Mughal archway of red sandstone in inlaid
with white marble, and four slender minarets rise up in perfect
geometrical proportion.
